Your average baron couldn't just keep stockpiling wealth without a purpose--there's not point without anything worthwhile to spend it on. But let's say someone is just hoarding more and more of it. You know what that makes them? A target.
Other corporations or individuals look at them as a threat or opportunity. One to either continue expansion or to neutralize as an inevitable threat. It's just the way of human beings to act like that.
This is why a good percentage of the nobles had to invest in standing armies and skilled soldiers. You look at all feudal societies (the West, nippon, and so on) and it's all the same. Fighting constantly over land, which in an agrarian society was the main source of income.
And to fight a war you have to have soldiers. The more enterprising found ways to keep them happy and on their side. The peasants got holidays off and occasional feasts. The Roman free citizen essentially became bought by his patrician to ensure his vote. Railroad and monopoly barons put up public libraries and other social programs.
It's only a matter of time before Amazon or some other company realizes they can get more return not from lobbying but just giving their employees 10 grand off their student loan debt or something, to ensure that Carlos Transloyal gets re-elected.
And when you had a stable society, the bickering continues in Parliament and upper chambers. But invariably, you turn outward. We'll reach another age of empire building soon despite what the nu-left claims it despises.
Whether out of pride or desire for plunder, that's where feudal societies end up going. Because everyone at the top wants to be king, and they secretly cannot stand for another to look better and have more. Or claim that its citizens are more well-off.
But since you bring up Teddy Roosevelt we might be headed for that age instead. Where the ultra-rich just threw lavish parties for themselves since there was nothing else they could do.
That came to a head, though, when the women decided to outdo themselves and throw more and more money away at expensive parties. Women's kind of warfare--but one where capital needed to be spent nonetheless.
Right now, the government just prints more money because there don't seem to be any consequences, so no one gives a fuck about it. But in burgerland now our debt is well past 90% of GDP. The money will soon mean nothing because the prices are unsustainable. You're going to end up with some kind of call to take over from the dollar (like China) and then current policy damn sure won't work.
So what will the State do? Look at the banks and other corps and decide they pay their 'fair share' come hell or high water. If the corporations aren't smart enough to eliminate their rivals beforehand or ensure they have massive enough influence on their own, they are doomed. And the State can easily just take over the single unrivaled industry. So the only option is fight to keep the people's loyalty and make themselves an equally rivaled force for the empire to appease.
And ensure wars are fought to bring in external plunder to pay for the debt spending instead of from the nobles.
Anyways, Mush-brain saying in that presser, that Democrats need a Republican party, is absolutely true.
They need a villain to keep propping themselves against to keep their tentpole alliance going, and not start eating themselves and start the infighting/collapse.
And it has to be a GOOD villain. One that wins occasionally and looks scary.
Not a joke that people can feel sorry for.
