Species was MGM attempting to get their own Alien/Predator/Jaws monster franchise. This was back in the ninties before Hollywood realized that nobody watches monster movies anymore. There were comic books, supplements for rpgs. It was going to be a whole thing. Then the second movie came out and torpedoed those plans. Species II was a real piece of shit, especially compared to the first one. The original wasn't a classic by any means, but I think the second movie kind of colored people's perceptions of the first.

The first was directed by a competent journeyman whereas II was made by some goofball German hack on a lower budget. The villain did kill a tranny for tricking him, though, so it had that going for it.
