The first few volumes of manga are basically entirely different, like redditeur said.

At least that time he was trying to rescue his brother, so losing had a serious implication for him. Kaiba's adventures with holograms are much, much worse, because it's him purely indulging in his retardness (like when he made an hologram of the Roman Colosseum and made the holographic spectators to be shouting his name the entire time).

Yeah, that shit stopped around Bakura, but it was interesting seeing how he came up with the penalty games.

I really liked the first seven volumes because it was a variety of games. For anyone who hasn't read them, basically the author researched what the kids were playing these days, made a knock off version of it and had that be the game they played in the chapter or chapters depending on how long it went. They spent a volume and a half on friggin' Dungeons and Dragons. Unfortunately right after that he decided to do Duelist Kingdom and then that ended up eclipsing the whole manga.

The difference in tone between the early stuff and the popular stuff is pretty amazing. It's like when you read that Magical Lyrical "loli girls pretending to be Gundams" Nanoha was originally a side-character from a H-game.

I just hope we'll get a stupid Hollywood live-action adaptation, 'cause they always have to start at the beginning, no matter how little people actually cared about the early volumes.

I'd kind of like to see them 'remake' the first anime with the second anime's animation and voice cast. Of course, they'd never do it because there's little-to-no cross promotional value in it. Even in the Toei series they had to put in Duel Monsters more than it was in the corresponding manga volumes.
