It sounds like he's just in the valley of nihilism. Most people stop down there because "There is no point to doing anything" when if they climbed out the other side of the trench the logical conclusion is that "There is also no point in NOT doing anything". Suddenly things seem less bleak and it's more about seizing your opportunities for the hell of it rather than doing nothing because "what's the point anyway?" There is no point, that is the point. You get to make it whatever you wish, even if it's nothing, you still are choosing it.

You can't really make it whatever you wish though. We are born with a limited set of skills and the choices you have are actually very few and are determined by your genes, your family and the society which surrounds you, your "choice" or rather the illusion of one usually comes down to this:

1. Work 9-5 until you die.
2. Be a leech.
3. Get lucky.
4. Kill yourself.

I personally have no problem with whichever a person decides to go with, as long as he's being honest about it and isn't bitching/bragging about it on twatter or other social media 24/7.
