Shit. Lebanon has been the Venezuela of the Levant these last couple of years and now a warehouse with 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate exploded, essentially taking out the whole port.

About 4000 injured and 5000 homeless. There is apparently shrapnel all over Beirut. Lebanon had to make sweeping cuts to their medical facilities as this Covid scare has left them in financial dire. Also, the huge damaged stone-like structure at ground zero was Lebanon's grain silos. Lebanon is fucked.

Huge amounts of chemical fertiliser (ammonium nitrate I think?) being improperly stored in an impound dock for years whilst a court case dragged on and on.

Yup. Ammonium nitrate, both used for fertiliziers and explosives. Basically a tactical nuke's worth of yield was just sitting in some warehouse like a big pile of salt for 7 years, with multiple warnings that have - of course - all been ignored.

This is probably one of the most avoidable tragedies in history.
