Drip.fm was started by a record label as something like patreon but exclusively for musicians. They got in way over their head and sold it to Kickstarter for spare change. Kickstarter then spent like 2 years trying to figure out how to make it work financially before throwing in the towel. There was just no way to make money at this unless people start spending a lot more or it scales massively to cover the entire planet.

Patreon is still extending their runway using venture capital and that's how they're absorbing the losses.

I thought about starting a company like this a few years ago. Once you actually know what business you're entering (rather than what you tell people you're entering), you will run for the hills. What Patreon, etc. are actually doing is extending the model of the credit card companies (a small fee-based commission for every $1 in sales), only without sales, without extending purchasing power, at 1/1,000,000th of the scale, without the banks that are the ones actually extending the credit and taking the risk -- but still not processing payments at all, which is another fee you absorb for $0 gain. And though people pass their money to you, you never hold on to it -- Patreon, by design, immediately disperses all funds. You can't make money re-investing it because it's never in your hands long enough. It's maybe the worst business in fintech that there is.

There's really nothing more sad than being involved in fintech and being trapped in a money-losing model. It's like being a poor drug kingpin or a pornographer that hangs out at soup kitchens.

That was a somewhat amusing situation, with everyone sperging the fuck otu because Patreon was contemplating a bigger slice of the pie. I think they offered to grandfather existing accounts, which just caused a bunch of losers to panic and hastily create an account, even if they didn't really plan to use it

Though they're probably just delaying the inevitable since they don't want to be seen as the bad guys. The Patreocalypse will come sooner or later.
