Re: Movie Thread
Part of what prodded HBO to pull "Gone With the Wind" was this LA Times Op-Ed by one of the screenwriters of "12 Years a Slave".
I read the article. I tried to keep an open mind. I tried to see it his way.
And I think this guy is a fag.
Summary: After he goes through the usual stuff about glorification of the old South and the Confederacy, he zeroes in on why he thinks the film is harmful today. He writes that it continues to give cover to those who falsely claim that clinging to the iconography of the plantation era is a matter of “heritage, not hate.”
He then goes on to say that he doesn't believe in censorship, but he thinks that the movie should be held back for "a respectul amount of time", and when it returns it should be accompanied by films that give a more complete picture of the plantation days. He also suggests that HBO pair it with "conversations" about the film. (I imagine a panel discussion hosted by Oprah Winfrey or Stacey Abrams before and after and maybe even in the middle; "Gone With the Wind" does have an intermission).
I wonder how harmful exactly is an 81-year-old, three-hour historical epic romance. (The kids can't wait to check that out, I'm sure.)
Mostly though, I'm irritated by that classic liberal move in which they don't TRUST you to come to reasonable conclusions about anything on your own. No, they have to guide you.

Not guide you. Outright tell you what your opinion ought to be and that you're a Nazi if you don't follow suit enthusiastically.Lindsay's Liver wrote: ↑Thu Jun 11, 2020 4:12 amMostly though, I'm irritated by that classic liberal move in which they don't TRUST you to come to reasonable conclusions about anything on your own. Re: Movie Thread
A film can't be harmful by definition unless harm was caused in its making, such as those chink movies where animals were hurt or killed during filming because asians don't give no fucks. Hearing a contrary opinion/seeing a contrary worldview is not harmful, no matter how much you disagree with said opinion or worldview. A film could advocate the murder of all jews and it would not be inherently harmful. It would be a conversation piece. Do I need to post Hitchens again on free speech? It's not only the right of popular speakers to be heard. It is the right of unpopular speakers to be heard. If someone is an idiot, it is their right to be an idiot, share their stupid opinion and be laughed at by everyone else. If an old movie portrays an outdated worldview, why not learn from the experience? Why not examine the film and see what it has to teach, for better or worse?
Hell, even my liberal university professors did this. Even THEY had us examine films like Dirty Harry. A lot of shitlibs nowadays would probably rather burn copies of Dirty Harry in a bonfire, as a sacrifice to their gods of virtue-signalling, rather than try to understand a contrary opinion.
Heart of Darkness is frequently argued to be a racist text. Does that mean people shouldn't read it? Hell no! It's a beautiful work of english prose, brilliantly evocative and chilling! Some people believe the content is racist, but that only makes the piece richer and more flawed (if you believe that) and more interesting to examine!
Censorshipfags should be gassed. If you read something and are offended by it, you should ask yourself WHY. Why did it have that power over you? Why were you offended? What about the text is challenging your ideas or emotions in that primal way, and why do you believe what you believe? A contrary viewpoint is not the enemy. It is a test of your knowledge, what you believe and why. If you are truly in the right, you can only be strengthened in your resolve by encountering alternative views.

All this banning of shit reminds me that I need to go buy Gods & Generals before it gets pulled forever. It's kind of an awful movie but has a great soundtrack.

Oh, what a lovely keikaku.
Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.
