The subscription gives you ad free access, better bitrate and the ability to download songs to listen offline to on a phone or something.
But just plain using it is free and in any case better than Youtube's compressed to shit quality even with a free account.

Using YT to listen to music is fucking annoying if you use a smartphone. Can't even turn off the fucking screen without the video pausing automatically. And of course you have to have to video playing instead of just getting the audio directly. Unless you're a premium user of course.

Newpipe has audio only playback. Unless you use iOS like a homo.
