That is actually 100% correct. The thought alone of getting excuses for his failure taken away would likely cause him to actually have a panic attack for once. In a fucked up way, having his life crumble to dust around him is what he wants because that frees him from obligations. The less things he "has to" do, the better. No matter the cost.
