The stage is pretty much set for him to die now - he's saved Data's daughter and he can give his life to stop the Romulan cultists who basically ruined Starfleet for him, and save the galaxy one last time. And nobody will watch season 2 then.

As Cuckara said, the way this show has been handled really is baffling. You'd think even a shitty writer would jump at the chance of doing a deep Picard-centric fanfic.
They'll probably let him merge with the holodeck or ship computer. Something dumb that will let them use Stewart's voice or else de-age him so he can be re-cast with another black actor.

As for the fan-fiction--everybody wants 80's virile TNG Picard in their fantasy. No one wants old-man physically slow and tired Picard.

That fantasy ended with Nemesis anyway. Trying to turn Picard into an action hero then was an Unintentional Comedy Hall of Fame movie. And that was twenty years ago!

I'm not sure if Hercules and Xena count as not-terrible. They were so hokey in a bad way (like PS1 looking CGI creatures) that I could never really get into them.
The worst part was the boring writing. The show should've stuck to its premise of simple fun. Instead it had convoluted plots involving bandit economic political motivations, when the principal characters should've just beaten them up in five seconds.

Yes, the show only had enough budget for 15 seconds of bad CGI. But a smarter show could've worked around it, instead of having them waste time talking to random town NPCs.
...and still: Spoony did nothing.

Hercules and Xena are basically a less shit version of Mortal Kombat: Konquest.

Did the boring shit start at season 3? Because that’s when Kurtzman and Orci started working on the show.

That's not really what I meant. Nobody would ask Stewart to swing on vines or have a Gorn fistfight. But I would at the very least expect them to write Picard with a bit of acidity, which he is capable of still delivering.

When Picard was needled over his departure from Starfleet and barked out "it was not Starfleet!!", that's when I felt it was the same man. He cares, but he doesn't have infinite patience. Picard should be verbally whipping his crew into shape and appealing to their better nature to get them to care about what's going on rather than their own personal problems, which he'd tell them to fuck off with until the Romulan shit is done.

Literally the only appeal of Xena was that Lucy Lawless was really hot

Yes. All these things you guys are mentioning are correct. The memories are coming back. I did find it boring.

When they did have battles, they were always super tame and lame. There was a very idiotic moral panic at the time about violence on TV that got Bruce Campbell's show Brisco County Jr. canceled.

These busybodies touted these totally fake statistics on which shows were the most violent and the studios and networks fell for it. I remember DS9 of all things was on their top 10 most violent list at one point.

Konquest was pure gold. Long stylized fights filled with some of the best martial artist stunt people of the time, prime Kristana Loken, and a bevy of hot babes always jiggling and nipping in skimpy outfits. Too bad it got prematurely cancelled over some rights dispute.

The writers would've needed to have seen TNG to know that..

I would love to make a joke about dumb Burgers here, but I distinctly remember some period of a couple weeks here in Krautland where Final Fantasy was up there with Doom and Counter-Strike in terms of most evil video games evar.

somebody fucking saw it to bring back Hugh from like two episodes in the 80s.
That being said, I'm gonna be genuinely pissed if they don't bring back de Lancie before this show's over. There's probably gonna be some dumb excuse like he's too old to play an immortal(even though he can fucking shapeshift).
