They're probably just a way for the channels to control the narrative of an episode's reaction. The GoT ones for the craptastic last season might be especially sad.

I doubt it, because no one watches them. The only rationale I can come up with is they make them to sell advertising space. Either because people are so hyped for the show that they'll watch anything with the show's name on it, or because they're so drained after seeing the latest episode that they can't be bothered to change the channel or turn off the television

Bad Robot is paying for the license to Star Trek. They only get money from merchandise from designs that are significantly different from regular Star Trek. So the money from a classic Shatner Capt. Kirk action figure goes to CBS, whereas the money from a Chris Pine JJ Trek Capt. Kirk action figure goes to Bad Robot.

The companies that make the merchandise realized a long time ago that fans don't want to buy anything based on the Bad Robot shit. To try and appease the licensors, Bad Robot added in more TNG character cameos and licensed more content from CBS, but they didn't fall for it.
