The showrunner that rebooted the show in 2005 had them killed offscreen to make the Doctor a mystery again. The second showrunner dedicated the 50th anniversary special to revealing that the Doctor had actually managed to save the planet all along. That got the fans hyped, but then the Doctor's return home episode was wasted on the Doctor merely using them to resurrect a Mary Sue and then fucking off without giving a shit.
So the third showrunner killed them all off again.

It is autism in show form, made by autists for autists.

And considering the Doctor is currently in his 13th (aka final) regeneration, they will probably revive the Time Lords yet again to raise that cap for him. No. 14 will probably be a black non-binary person.
Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

Maybe? It'll be about as canonical as that time a fourth doctor episode implied he'd had several regenerations before the first doctor.
