Ah, yes, his "review" of Phantom Mencace, which came 5 years after the movie aired. And he did not receive "death threats", rather the roleplaying magazine he got published in kicked him out after only receiving fan mail about how Noah is a shitstain for a year. I kind of remember his well-versed and witty critique. It was something along the lines of "AAAH, I HATE THIS, EVERYONE WHO WATCHES AND LIKES EVEN ONE BIT IS RETARDED, GEORGE LUCAS SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABORTED!!!" - for two pages. Not even entertaining prose. Where other writers would seek synonymous usages of the same word (i.e. defacation instead of shit), Noah mashed his keyboard furiously, telling us "THIS IS SHIT THIS IS SHIT THIS IS SHIT" ad nauseam.

But still, he gives himself too much credit like the narcissist he is. The hate he received was his own fault, and not even centered on his rant on Ep.I. Picture a niche comic strip magazine for D&D dorks at the start of the millenium, where they praise oldschool roleplaying and sexist nerd-jokes, a safe haven for elegan/tg/entlemen, if you will.

In comes this "Spoony Bard", and what does he do? To mark his territory, he flings shit onto Geek-holyground like Babylon 5, Firefly, Conan, Ladyhawke, Krull, and even Labyrinth. Whew, way to play to a crowd Noah.

FFVIII is different, but not necessarily bad. Every FF game just about tried something new to stand out, and VIII existed in the experimental PS1 era. It’s not my favorite in the series or even top 3, but it’s better than stupid people like Spoony give it credit for. He’s just a contrarian asshole like you said and his stupid opinion poisoned the well that is the minds of dumbass people on the internet.

I enjoyed it just fine. Not the best, not the worst. My point was that Spoony makes out like he was the first one who dared breathe a word against it, when the truth was that plenty of people hated it for years before he showed up. All of that "oh man i was this big final fantasy troll pissing everyone off haha" shit falls kinda flat when you consider that the game he started it all with was never a sacred cow to begin with.

Oh, FFVII and VIII were both catching massive heaps of shit before Spoony ever made a video about them. Just like how everyone claims RLM made people hate the prequels. I'm sure it did for some, but prequel hate was all over the place well in advance of RLM doing anything.

I don't remember VII getting hate early on. But yeah VIII was definitely hated from day 1. It's why people were relieved with the direction IX took.

Ironically, Spoony refused to review 9 since he hated the character designs or at least he gave that as a reason. Probably because he knew people will look at him as a hack if he did.
