Credit where credit is due, he's very good at visually telling the story, Dr. Sleep is a good looking movie. The last third of the movie when they're in the Overlook really made me want to see Mike Flanagan direct a proper, James Sunderland-starring, Silent Hill 2 movie. I have a suspicion the issues I have with it primarily stem from plot and character choices that were present in the source material.

For example, while I think the characterization of Danny is actually really solid (and MacGregor is up to the task), there's like this middle-school aged black girl who's like super in tune to The Shining and she's "the strongest" Rebecca Ferguson (also *really* good in the movie) and her cabal have ever seen and she's' just...the worst character in the movie, by like, a country mile.

For one, the actress they got isn't doing a very good job, she's really fucking flat. And she seems unfazed by everything that happens. There's a scene where she projects to Rebecca and co. murderlesting a kid and she freaks out over that and that seems appropriate, but eventually those same people murder her dad and she has close to no visible change. She also really relishes watching Rebecca Ferguson's flunkies die (there are multiple scenes demonstrating this) and the movie never comments on this apparently developing sadism.

Like this fucking kid should have hella damage by the end of this movie, but the way she winds up responding to it all is completely unbelievable. She has that shitty Captain Marvel type arc where she 'realizes she was superexcellent the whole time.' I guess King wanted an OC Waifu that he could fap to.

I think you could have made this character work though. Because early in the movie, Danny develops a friendship with this kid because he sees a lot of his own issues in her, if you had made it so that she actually walked away from seeing shit like ghosts, demons, immortal child predators and the death of her father with discernible psychological damage you could have a decent thematic bridge about nobody wants to be like their parents but they wind up passing that shit on anyway and how little control we have over that process. That's why I say the movie owes more allegiance to King than Kubrick, because Kubrick had no problem with a downer fucking ending.

I'm making this aspect of the movie sound like a trainwreck, and it sort of is; but its more frustrating to watch than anything else, because its constantly clashing with the elements of the film that actually work.
