I'm not going to get too blogposty here, but I will attest to this approach's effectiveness, so yes, everything that follows is spoken from experience. At worst, a diary simply provides release. That shit you've been yelling over and over again inside your head? Write it down. Now it's out of your head. This can also be extremely helpful in more ways that just that; simply requiring yourself to come up with ways to phrase things for the sake of putting pen to paper forces you to think about them beyond just letting them nebulously float around in your head. This can re-contextualize things, remind you of earlier memories that might be linked to more current shit, cause you to notice patterns, ect. And those breakthroughs can be great motivation for working through the shit you uncover. I'll abstain from any examples (anonymity and nobody giving a shit anyway), but I will restate... this isn't just me blowing platitude-laden smoke here.

And this is why all of this sadbrain fuckery simultaneously pisses me off and saddens me so much; for issues like this that are almost completely internal (memories, regrets, past choices,ect), the power to work through them does exist within that person. You just have to actually want to do it, and be willing to confront the dank shit you've been hiding even from yourself.
