I hate to admit this, but I sperged out for second when one of the comments said that none of Kubrick's films had any emotional core.

Stephen King claims that the upcoming Doctor Sleep 'partially redeems' Kubrick's "The Shining." A ringing anti-endorsement if I've ever heard one.
he's saying it because it retcons the plot points from the Shining that contradicted his book
Apparently not all of them. Because doesn't the Overlook Hotel burn to the ground in the book? It's still standing in the Doctor Sleep movie.
well yeah, I guess King had to capitulate on that one, given that otherwise the whole Kubrick homage thing would be impossible
the novel's references to the original were more about the specific ghosts

DHI is proof you can be both a massive homosexual and a virgin. They're not exclusive. If you display both in large enough quantities you can qualify for mod status.

Van Helsing was supposed to be the start of a proto-Dark Universe but didn't make a jillion dollars. Same with Wolfman and Dracula Untold.

Decision time: 1999 Rachel Weisz or 2004 Kate Beckinsale?

You forgot the Mummy. Maybe fifth time's the charm

Except none of that's true other than Dracula Untold, which was retroactively added to the Dark Universe in reshoots. Van Helsing was meant to try and replicate the success of The Mummy '99 and The Wolfman was never supposed to be part of any "Cinematic Universe". It started out as a medium budget horror movie until the budget ballooned out of control and a bunch of action scenes were added in reshoots.

Universal has been exploiting its classic monsters for decades, just like every other studio with recognizable characters. The problem is on the movie front they've consistently given them huge blockbuster budgets they have no chance of making back.

I guess this goes in this thread - I read Roger Avary(Pulp Fiction screenwriter)'s script for a fifth Phantasm movie and it's almost a shame that it didn't get make, because it would've been a legendary shitshow. I don't even know where to begin.
The Tall Man tentacle monster? His emo teenager dialogue? The fact that the OG main protagonist appears in one scene and is killed off-camera?

The entire script is basically Bruce Campbell's character, his Aliens ripoff military team and Reggie the ice cream man(and his monkey) mowing down "pussy zombies"(Avary's words, not mine) in a post-apocalyptic Salt Lake City until they go to the Tall Man's world, which is some fucked up Victorian mansion, so they can blow up a universe-destroying bomb from the Cold War. It's like Avary saw Phantasm 2, thought the keyword was "batshit" and then wrote a movie that had the only two characters in it that he remembered.

But the funniest thing is, that having seen Phantasm Ravager, I know which parts Coscarelli straight up ripped from that script without crediting Avary.

Ravager was a bit of a mess though anyways. It's the only Phantasm movie that I don't think I could ever go back and watch. I will say that one particular scene with Mike, Reggie and Jody in the hospital was quite touching and sad.

Didn't that movie start out as a web series or something? I seem to recall that.
