Does working for totalitarian corporation like EA sound like something appealing? I'm the last person to ever defend any corporation even if I happen to like what they shit out. Theres just as much garbage now as there was back then. The only difference is that more of the big money is behind the garbage, and that it's easier for everyone to make the same amount of noise.

People hated Nintendo's draconian licensing policies, but it forced developers to put out higher quality or sink with their one year released title being a giant bomb. They also did their own internal promoting--like with Nintendo Power--to ensure their console wasnt known for garbage
In the 90s Sony and Microsoft pushed the stuff that made their systems look good because they were trying to establish legitimacy.
Now? Consoles have caught up so far that the PC market has been majorly de-emphasized. Lazy developers can just shut out Unity engine titles that have as many hours of content/features as the old AAAs. Anyone can be a opinion "reviewer," when before you had like 5 magazines and games fighting for space.

Of course there are still great things out there. But it's harder to find them through the noise and pandering. Most of the hardware companies know their position is pretty much secured, and that they basically only serve now as a fancy digital marketplace boxes, so they dont care.
What goes on the front page is just who gave them money most recently.

And that's also not true, I've recently returned to HOMAM 3 to finally finish all the campaigns and my most played game in past 10 years is still Mount and Blade. You know nothing. Nothing!
