I'm glad I know pretty much nothing about Sonic stuff. If SEGA had stuck with Alex Kid instead, lots of autism wouldn't have happened (and CWC could have been a normal human being), but it is what it is.

Is dragon quest even good though? I played VIII and it was like pulling teeth to get anything done. Game is slow as fuck even by rpg standards.

8/16bit-era DQs are decent Wizardry/Ultima rip-offs with nice sound track and Dragonball art works. I played 3 and 5 on SNES because they tend to be praised by cult followers and I thought they were okay with x4 exp/gold cheat and x3~5 turbo (otherwise unplayable due to too much repetitive combat).
DQ is inferior to Wizardry games in combat/exploration, and also inferior to Ultima in quest design/story but not that bad overall.

Earthbound is probably the best Dragon Quest style game though because writings are good and combat are much less not grindy. (and Metal Max series are good DQ alternatives too, probably)
