Making youtube videos is a hobby the same way doing standup comedy is a hobby. Nobody really does a hobby like that just for themselves. Sure some people do it on the side instead of professionally, hit up the open mic night at the bar, but they still want people to watch. If someone keeps performing a full (horrible) standup routine once a week for years in their own living room, with nobody but their wife and friend watching, it's at best ridiculously pathetic, at worst a sign of insanity.

They at least know how to hop on a trend. You can talk about the latest fad (just be sure you do it early and often), you can find some niche interest almost nobody else is talking about and corner the market, or you can just be entertaining. Any of those three things will help you grow on youtube. This guy does none of the above.

It's a lot about networking and outright luck, isn't it? If I posted a YouTube video of me reviewing a video game today I might as well have not done it at all since there's so much other content and it's very unlikely a significant amount of people would even see the thumbnail.
