I'm pretty sure Super Sentai was meant to be the lighter alternative to Kamen Rider. Making a durk and eggy Rangers movie seemed doomed from the start.

I bet the trailers already turned may off. It was just some doom and gloom capeshit origin thing. A colorful martial arts romp with lazor beams would've probably gone over better.

(And Kamen Rider and Super Sentai have pretty much the same target audience. Kamen Rider comes right after Super Sentai, and though many Riders have been more serious, there have been quite a bit of goofy ones as well.)
