I mean, what video can you, or anyone point to, that Mark made because he was passionate about it? I think even MetalJesusSucks makes videos bragging about his shitty game collection and he's happy in those videos. What's Mark happy about? His napkin doodles? 1 minute shit animations where he calls others entitled while going off the rails mentally? What does he ENJOY? I can't get a sense of it from his videos because his videos are all advertisements and forced CGR memes.

I think he does have a wife. And his passion would come out when playing an old shmup game and mecha shit, you can tell after the PS1 at the latest (though likely the SNES) he gives no fucks about gaming when he really should have been reviewing new shit. He always had the work ethic since he treated it as a job unlike other INs but he is clearly burned out and had no interest in newer games. Towards the tail end of his show he was reviewing random mech and shmup games from the late 80s/early 90s that got fuck all views and made the mistake Larry called "I review whatever I want". That is fine for a channel for fun, but if it's for a job you need to review relevant shit. This is why he made Undertow, he had Derek review new shit that he clearly could have done if he cared and that was a warning sign looking back.

That video I shared shows he knows that no one gives a fuck about old games anymore. PS1/N64 nostalgia is in now and that is when he gave less of a fuck about gaming, and realising he can't do this job anymore like he used to has made him depressed and jaded. MetalJesus by comparison doesn't hate newer games so he can do his shit forever and shill more HIDDEN GEMS until he dies.

Just look at his reviews with the highest views. It's all old shit he reviewed back when those games were relevant like Mario Kart Wii (in fact a lot of his highest viewed videos are Wii reviews from 10 years ago), almost none of them are old retro reviews. He could have reviewed new shit and done the retro crap in between big releases but he became a jaded asshole.

This old fuddy-duddy never realized that part of the reason people are going wild over old games from the ps1 and ps2 gen is those games were really fucking good, way better than his arcade shmup ports and ancient amiga games. There's plenty of really old games (older than SNES era) that either haven't held up or were never good in the first place. But the PS1 era library had a lot of fantastic games in it. Storytelling in gaming blossomed in the ps1 era. Full voice acting came in, we got better audio quality for soundtracks and multiple discs for much longer games overall. Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil 2 feel a lot more immersive than the shitty vectrex games do.

It isn't just that everyone is getting older and so what used to be new is now retro and what's retro is now ancient. That's a factor, but not the only one. The HIDDEN GEMS thing got to be a meme in the first place because there genuinely are some fantastic games that people don't know about.

Gotta love the "they have no attention spans" meme. The current youtube metric favors long videos and the average video length has gotten much longer. A lot of channels post hour+ videos regularly and those videos get fantastic engagement. Mark is just bitter because he never had anything worth saying and people have moved away from his repetitive, forced meme-filled boomer videos.

And that's the root of all his misery. What could the dude say about games he likes? There is nobody that actually tells you interesting stuff about the Vectrex. Why didn't he? Because he has nothing interesting to say. It's just "lol Vectrex" and that's it. Nobody wants to watch that shit anymore.
Long form video essays about movies, TV shows, books and vidya are all the rage right now. People watch two hour videos about something they don't even care about because the people that make those videos care about the topic and have interesting things to say. If you don't have more to offer than " lul Vectrex amirite guize" and shilling your "cyborg ninja" garbage that seems too lowbrow for a toddler you're not going to be able to make a living from videos today.

He never had anything to say because he doesn't have any strong opinions about games, period. Even back in the day, people noticed that all his reviews were generically positive. You could swap his review audio for any game within a genre to any other game of the same genre and nobody would notice. Like what I did with Movieblob Reviews the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That's a hallmark of someone with very generic criticisms/nothing to say.

On the opposite end, you have guys like matthewmitosis who will sperge for 40 minutes about bioshock infinite's ending and time shenanigans. I don't know if Mark reviewed bioshock infinishit, but if he did, it's probably a generic as fuck review where he just says it's a shooter and not broken so it gets a thumb's up "if you like these kinds of games."
