It must be true!"

I remember a lot of similar stories about skinny gray aliens with black eyes abducting people on shows like Unsolved Mysteries. People telling similar stories doesn't make them true.

Indeed. And that daisy-chaining and mutual reassurance can lead to two people kinda-sorta remembering something happening a certain way - accurately or not - who then corroborate each other, leading both to firmly believe that it definitely happened that way - again, accurately or not. This isn't by any means meant to claim that more people saying a thing necessarily makes it less reliable; simply that sheer numbers don't on their own make claims that much more reliable.
