Reminder that Doge didn't tell his fans or even his co-workers that NC would be completely replaced with Demo Reel and they all had to find out their meal ticket would disappear the hard way.

It's as if people expected Doge to develop actual breasts from which they could suckle milk their entire lives. That's the level of entitlement we're talking here.

Reminder that JesuOtaku whined and complained when Doge brought the NC back. She called him a sellout.

Isn't this basically an admission on their part that they were just leeching off of his fame and couldn't stand on their own feet?

Yeah. I remember Lindsay actually being honest about it at the time when it started affecting her wallet. Most of the others were either silent or supported the killing of the NC like JesuOtaku did. I think they initially believed that if the NC was out of the way, they'd get their time in the spotlight and more viewers.

Reminder that it was supposed to be an emotional exit stage left for those watching, so telling them is counter-productive. I'm sorry, I meant to say bloody stupid.

Reminder that basically every one of the dozens people involved absolutely live on social media. I wouldn't bet a penny on it staying a secret for more than twenty minutes.

Reminder that every one of them had their own shows, channels and websites, and that their listing on TGWTG stayed the same. Might've sucked, but it just proved that they couldn't stand on their own.

[OPINION] The wasted potential of Channel Awesome: How Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis and Rob Walker ruined what could've been

Post by Guest » Fri Feb 15, 2019 5:40 pm

...a great place for content creation in the level of Polaris, Red Letter Media and Rooster Teeth.

I used to be a fan of TGWTG. Every day, every week and every minute was me waiting for the next few videos by Nostalgia Critic, Lindsay Ellis, Phelous, Brows Held High, ToddInTheShadows, AngryJoe and even Linkara. I discovered them in TGWTG and while Lindsay, BHH and Phelous are like the only ones who are "evolving" as content creators as of 2011, majority of TGWTG creators were still making content that looked like it was from 2006 (especially Linkara, who still makes 4:3 camcorder videos in 2011). I even heard about The Walker Brothers not using Multicam setups for both Kickassia and Suburban Knights which even scratched my head. I was even frustrated by how TGWTG management did not even help improve the technical side for content creators, especially in 2011 when even Youtubers can make 720p/1080p DSLR-quality content with well-made sets and proper lighting.

The straw that broke the camels back for me was when I discovered YT creators like Red Letter Media and YourMovieSucks in 2012 who provided well-made content even on a cheaper budget, especially RLM. My introduction to Red Letter Media was watching The Half in the Bag for Jack and Jill via BrocksDubs and the presentation, writing and humour were WAY above what anyone at TGWTG (with the exception of Lindsay and BHH) were making.

The moment TGWTG died for me was when Doge announced in To Boldly Flee that he's retiring The Nostalgia Critic to make Demo Reel. When the disastrous "pilot" for Demo Reel was released, RLM released the HITB for The Resident Evil movies and the latter made me a fan for life. Plus, RLM had made

As years go on I also discovered great content "groups" like Rooster Teeth. Eventhough Rooster Teeth was older than TGWTG/CA, they were still making content that TGWTG wished they'd make. Rooster Teeth made stuff like RWBY and Day 5 that I'm pretty sure Doge and Rob wanted to make but were too incompetent at it. Hell, Lazer Team was a better "crossover film" than any of the TGWTG anniversary crossover films. And speaking of films, Red Letter Media has made three movies whose budgets were WAY cheaper than then amount that TGWTG/CA received from Indiegogo to make that failed game show pilot. Hell, RLM's Best of the Worst had more set design and still less budget than Pop Quiz Hotshot.

Also, while Mike Michaud were threatening CA content creators for making Patreon pages, both Rooster Teeth and RLM were embracing Patreon with open arms. Plus, they were also adding livestream events to their websites while CA still doesn't have a livestream page outside their charity events that they don't even make anymore. It's fucking embarrassing that a company that wants to be seen as "THE PLACE FOR NERDS AND GEEKS" are trying to shut down any form of innovation that could financially help such nerds and geeks.

Looking at the recent #complicit stories, it makes sense how much people like Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis and Rob Walker ruined what could've been a great place for content creation. They could've been a low-budget competitor to Rooster Teeth. Hell , they had Ashens, Guru Larry and THE ENTIRE TEAMFOURSTAR CREW on the site and they still blew it. Hell, as Rooster Teeth also had a Multi-Channel Network division set up, I was even more confused by the lack of a MCN system for all their creators. It was bizarre to see Doge be with Fullscreen and Angry Joe & Chris Stuckmann being with Maker Studios. Turning into a MCN could've actually saved Channel Awesome (since they could save monetisation issues and help pay the creators without the need of multi roll ads), but Mike Michaud is too much of a dumbass hack fraud to actually consider the idea. Oh well.
