I don't know about any other british brands, but Marks and Spencer tend to have much bigger shirts than I'm used to, their L is XL at least. It very much depends, but you don't have to be a manlet (I'm taller than Kugel) to wear M if it fits you well - especially if you prefer not having to pull your shirt into your pants.
