i believe you recall *incorrectly*. i'm pretty sure i've seen an interview with romero and he basically said the fact of him casting the black man in that role was purely coincidental and had absolutely nothing to do with the plot and he wasn't at all trying to make any kind of social commentary with that decision. he just liked the guy's acting.veris leta facies wrote: ↑Sat Oct 27, 2018 9:28 pmWell, wasn't that the intentional point? IIRC Romero was making a statement there how blacks were treated as a second class citizens in murica, how that guy who shot him didn't really even care was he a zombie or not. Romero was being an SJW 50 years ahead of its time!VoiceOfReasonPast wrote: ↑Sat Oct 27, 2018 8:52 pmIt's also very problematic because a black guy gets shot.
I agree with pibbs, NotLD isn't really that good, but I do appreciate it as a trailblazer of its genre.

That's very much possible as I don't remember where I heard it from. Probably that's just some fan theory.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the "racial commentary" was something fans came up with. I also heard that Romero said in interviews that he hired the guy purely because he was the best actor for the part, and given the limited pool of actors someone on Romero's budget would have had access to, it's no surprise he would jump to use anyone decent.

Look at all these holier than thou fags trying to impress the mods here by knocking an innovator in film.
I watched NOTLD for the first time a few months ago. It was breddy good, but a) that blonde chick was really fucking annoying. I get that she was traumatised by watching her brother die, but there came a point where her "shock" and uselessness just became a distraction, and b) I don't feel the need to watch it again. Dawn of the Dead is a much better zombie movie, uneven as it may be.
The gore effects absolutely hold up though.

People just didn't understand PTSD back then, or mental illness in general. It was almost always depicted in goofy ways in TV and movies.Pope Corky III wrote: ↑Mon Oct 29, 2018 2:59 pmI get that she was traumatised by watching her brother die, but there came a point where her "shock" and uselessness just became a distraction

Night of the Living Dead is a classic but Dawn and Day of the Dead are a lot more entertaining.

Also has more memorable characters. NotLD basically just has Black Guy and Ms. PTSD, and only one of those is tolerable.

It's still funny to me that Doge's main sponsor was that tux rental site. Who looks at Doge and his audience and thinks "yeah, these are the kind of people that need formal attire?"
