Hip hop was devised as a youth activity to keep people out of gangs. Battle with words, not bullets, etc. etc. Shit started going wrong with NWA and Tupac because they were encouraging rappers to be part of gangs, which was the exact opposite of the whole point of Afrika Bambatta's invention. It never really recovered after that. Kanye was just another carboard cutout of bullshit thuggery that we were supposed to have keks at because he got into a car accident that fucked up his jaw so he could never rap again. But unfortunately people stopped laughing and started taking it seriously.
