Why were Picard and Data featured so heavily in the TNG films? Because Stewart and Spiner had the two biggest egos of the cast and demanded it. That's part of the reason those movies are so shit, having to rewrite the scripts to their whims.

Patrick Stewart had the clout to do that and keep his career. Spiner got a couple of film roles and most of those movies flopped. I think Master of Disguise was a career killer for almost everyone involved.

I guess they were also going for some kind of Kirk/Spock-analogue for the TNG movies, forgetting that the TOS movies didn't really forget the rest of the cast.

Stewart's acting career was never dependent on film and television roles. I mean, the whole draw of him being on Star Trek was he was a classically trained Shakespearean actor doing bloody Star Trek. Even if he stunk up the place doing Star Trek and could never get another film role he could always go back to the theatre and do Shakespeare until he retired or died.

Spiner on the other hand, his best role was Data and he can't even play Data any more because he's aged too much.

If you look at him playing Soong, he isn't that much fatter. They just fucked up with the makeup.
