Re: What are you playing?
For upcoming "boomer shooters" (retarded term, I know) I would recommend looking into "Forgive me Father" (reminiscent of Blood), and "Hrot" (a better Quake like) and lastly "Prodeus", an excellent klessik Doom clone where you can even switch between render sprite objects or 3d (although the latter isn't necessary).
They're all still in early access I think so handle with care but I found them quite satisfying.
Also "Cultic", VERY close to Blood, but seems to only have 1 level demo so far.

Re: What are you playing?
You hate Quake 1 but like Doom 3? What is this garbage taste. Doom 3 is fucking awful. It's a shitty half life/system shock clone, except even worse than that description would suggest. Because the game is also completely pitch black and full of monster closets. It's not scary, but "startling" is a good word, since you'll constantly be getting assmauled and whipping your camera around in surprise to shoot an enemy you are certain wasn't there a microsecond ago. Doom 3 has shit weapons too. How do you fuck up a shotgun that badly in a Doom game? The machine gun, pistol, rocket launcher are all awful too. They give virtually no feedback when shooting and their sound effects are like wet farts compared to the glorious snarling retort of DOOM II's shotty.Newhalf wrote: ↑Fri Feb 25, 2022 6:32 amYea nu doom is awful, and I say that as someone who still lists Doom 2 as favorite game of all time (with brutal mod) and I honestly even like Doom 3 although it's very different.
Quake 1 and 2 don't bother really they're awful slogs and I never liked them back in the day, Dusk has been better except for some levels that just go overkill on instant death masher traps and the like, but Quake really loves those as well.

I will say one thing in favor of Doom 3, okay? Resurrection of Evil is fun. That is a fun expansion and it's way better than the base game. The new weapons are alright, especially compared to the shit from base Doom 3. RoE is short but it's fun and you can't ask for more from doom 3 engine doom, which is like the McDick's of fucking hamburgers. It was never going to be good, but you were hungry and it tasted kind of like food.
Hrot looks good. Prodeus is getting hyped everywhere, which makes me suspect it is secretly garbage.
I should also play more Duke 3d. I was a little annoyed with the amount of ammo that game gives you though, and it has a fair number of hitscan enemies. But the guns feel good to use.

Yeah too bad the good version of Duke 3D isn't on Steam anymore unless you already own it.

I prefer games to be finished before even thinking about pirating buying them.
Just pirate ring of reddit instead.

Re: What are you playing?
Honestly, the only things Doom 2 had going for it was the Super Shotgun and the OST. Maybe I say this because unlike the other Dooms (with the exception of nu-Doom and Eternal because it was hard to stomach the former which is why I don't have the latter), I never finished II but the maps always seemed like it couldn't figure out what it wanted to be.
But now I understand what one of you were talking about when comparing the first Quake to the rest of them as it had a Gothic/Nightmarish style to it that was lost in the sequels. The sense of natural progression you got from 93 Doom is lost on II's part.

Re: What are you playing?
Monumental architecture and vertical level design are two major hallmarks of Quake 1. Not only do you have all these massive structures, but they are fully explorable on every level, which would not have been possible in Doom or Build engine games. That, plus most of the enemies don't have hitscan weapons, plus all the different enemy types can fight each other, plus the perfect movement system are why its gameplay still holds up. I'm just curious if Dusk can really stand against the classics. Of course, another big point in favor of those classic FPS is they have a shitload more content than anything similar made today.
Re: What are you playing?
Dusk is irritatingly average. They got many thing right, but for everything they got right there are thing that suck ass.
Weapons are basic, gun, shotgun, 2 shotguns, machine gun, sniper rifle, rocket and grenade launcher, sword and scythe. Basic, but they sound fucking wonderful. Overall sound design is fucking great, even soundtrack. Hullshult understands the game and nailed it.
First episode is also pretty nice, but basic in design. It's clean and clear, easy to navigate. Shooting is also fun.
And then there's game itself. When those fuckers do mostly basic arenas, it's fun, but when they go for claustrophobic horror shooter in tight corridors it sucks as much ass as final chapters of half-life.
Second episode is total cancer with that, dark rooms full of invisible enemies, and they also like to break your flashlight, so have fun running in the dark, fucker! Also stage design is dreadfull, corridors look the same, it's dark and mostly unappealing. There are maybe like 2-3 stages that are passable/ok.
Episode 3 is ok, but gimmick stages are boring. Bosses also mostly suck ass and guardian or whatever that fucking thing where you have to teleport between stages is called.
Game is annoying, because with better stage design it could've been gold. But it's not.
Amid Evil and Ultrakill are leaps and bounds above Dusk. Dread Templar also shapes up to be good. Nightmare Reaper looks promising, but performance blows. I also second ForgIve Me Father, they nailed gameplay and guns, but it's too fucking easy.

Opinion discarded.
Tictac, just try DUSK out. You know I've got it shared.
Awesome soundtrack, fast movement, precise gunplay.
I understand the criticisms by guest but I reject them. The episodes all go for a different feel and they escalate. One is about as much like Quake as you'll get and then it goes into Thief territory with levels.
Amid Evil is also fucking great and I've sperged quite a lot about it already. You should play both either way. I should have AE shared as well but if I don't, it's lightweight, it's in GOG, do downloads should be easy enough to find.
As for Quake, I know for sure that I've got the OG soundtrack shared. Be sure to grab that, pirate the game and run it on a source engine. Personally, I find Quakespasm to be perfectly fine.
