Because Mag is shit, Volt easy and early to get and Excal is strong as fuck up to the midgame and can just cheese the sub bosses.
But no big deal overall. If you get Rhino, he's ultra strong early game, dips mid and becomes super strong late game again.

Yeah, I'm grinding up rhino. Volt really dropped off around Phobos/Ceres.

Rhino will last You up to the infinite modes as is.
Later on you'll need some mods for the "end game" with Rhino but then he'll still be viable up to levels way into the 100s. So practically anything but a self-imposed challenge is possible.

Frost will be another super helpful frame. Or Limbo. Their bubbles can protect objectives and will carry you hard.
Especially Limbo is just plain broken and one of the few frames with basically no level cap as he can avoid all damage indefinitely.

Frost is really good in a way that allows you to play however you want. I'm a big fan of Frost. He's not super specific like fucking Mesa or Valkyr. He can run any type of mission and any weapons.

Don't pay real money for primes btw. Just farm materials that people will buy on the open market and sell them for plat. Use the plat to buy primes. Individually or as a set, whichever is cheaper. I had/have most of the primes. I don't know what the economy is like in that game now since I haven't played in ages, but there are always some primes that cost less than others, and some of those will be really strong despite the low cost. You don't need primes of course, but once you find a frame you really like, you may as well get a prime for the extras. Some of the prime outfits are trash but most are alright.

My most recommended frames for general play would probably be Thicc Thighs Prime (Saryn), Frost Prime or Oberon Prime. They can be built to whatever you want. I mostly used Equinox Prime because I loved her skills.

I fucking hate Limbo. I hate playing with shitty Limbos. He's absolutely broken sure, but he's one of the worst team mates you can have. He puts portals everywhere while flying around, thus ensuring portals fall on your face and send you into the shadow realm. He blasts his 1 all over and accidentally banishes team mates. Sure, you can just get out of it, but that forces you to waste time and not get kills. Limbo makes a game less fun. Very few limbos can play him worth a shit.
