They do with limited success. I got about 50% revival rate with it.

That’s not bad is you’re desperate to repair a valuable disc I guess, better than nothing. Doesn’t the one thing sort of buff out and/or sand down the disc? Seems kinda risky. I saw a more modern take on that with an entire kit included.

Yeah basically it removes a layer of disc, that's why it often recommends you do it multiple times on the same disc to try and get far enough into the scratch, but if you go to far you'll hit data and if scratches are deep enough nothing can fix it.

I tried the toothpaste bullshit with xbox discs and I think it's a waste of time, mostly. Maybe if you're making money off the discs then it's worth it to spend time slathering toothpaste onto a disc on the OFF chance that it might work and let you sell the scratched game for $30. But I think a 50% revival rate is fucking generous. Sometimes a disc is just fucked and you have to chuck it.

I bought a bunch of babylon 5 tv seasons and half the discs arrived scratched to fuck and unplayable. Reddit Cat must be moonlighting with DVDs. I didn't buy them all from the same guy, either, so either reddit cat uses alt accounts or he's running a scratched dvd ring.

Guest is absolutely right. The new transfers they did for iTunes/Amazon/various others are vastly superior to the old DVDs anyway.

Get a good automated one and they work fairly well. I can only think of like 5 games that didn't work out of the 20ish I had

afaik those "remove scratches" tricks, pastes etc might only work if the scratch is only on the surface and haven't gone to the content layer, if that damages, you are shit out of luck.
