Exterior "brick veneers" provide no strength at all, they actually weaken the existing wall because they hang off of it (though that's usually the least of your problems). There is also a gap between the existing wall and the veneer which frequently leads to insect nests and mold growth. It's one of the worst "advances" in home building there has ever been.

It's an advance for the builders and the realtors not for you. They can charge the same or more for the house but they get to cut corners everywhere. Real brick masonry was to hold the house up, while the facade is just a cheap wooden house with a fake brick facade. It looks good if you're an idiot and don't think deeply about it. These buildings are meant to be built, used for 50 years, and then demolished with new ones built. The analogy to fast food is apt: it's the cheapest possible building possible, saves the makers a lot of money and they dump the extra costs onto you and the rest of society. Like various maintenance problems or how it's obviously not built to last.
