I feel like self aware was just a way to get away with keep doing it. Just take the same formula then sprinkle in jokes about how cliche it is...but you're still doing the same formula.

From what I remember, Spoony said in his commentry that Pat contacted him about Highlander End Game when he was doing his Highlander reviews. He said Pat knew a lot about the production and scenes in trailers that weren't in the movie. And how Pat just ran without a script a lot and it threw Spoony off. Yea, I use to listen to the commentaries.

Also despite alienating the organizers of Magfest, the suite​ was a good idea for review cross overs. If you've got to film in a hotel room at a con, at least do it right. Another example of small, cheap thinking at TGWTG.

I remember there was a year or so where they even pointed out how cliche the whole "I don't want to do a crossover, okay now I do" joke had gotten. Did they just go back to doing it straight?
