Cool. By the end of the year, Japan's business visa will require about $200,000, not just about $35,000. One of the few plans I was considering will be completely annihilated. Bar for entry is just too high. Considering Japan just got more xenophobic this past election, I'm sure that's the point.

I'm not totally opposed to moving to Canada, but I would need to be convinced that I would not catch pneumonia every winter, because even in southern California I get deathly ill for two to three months at a time during the cold and the rain. Help me solve that, and you might have a deal.

I'd have just about jumped right on Canada's self employment visa, but apparently it's been so damn popular that it's closed until January 2027. Past that, I honestly don't know what I'd do. Can't stay without a job.

As far as climate is concerned, New Zealand would be the winner for me. As far as where I know the most people already, that'd be Canada. I only know maybe one to two people in each of the other largely English-speaking countries.
