Are you kidding? Fucking nobody had a cell phone in the 80s. They were huge, sinfully expensive and barely worked. If you had dosh you had a car phone. Kids wouldn't have mobile phones up until the mid 90s and most not even then.
It perfectly mirrors the internet. Available pretty early but too expensive and not useful enough to have for many people.

even in the 90s and early 00s a lot of my friends didn't have their own phones, but I'm a flat 30, live in AR and come from a pretty poor background. I had a landline until 2008.

I saw my first cell phone (probably a car phone actually) sometime in the late 80s or early 90s. By the mid 90s I knew maybe a dozen people with those old motorola micro/star tacs. By the end of the 90s/early 00s I knew maybe a dozen people who didn't have a cell phone of some type.

I'm sure it varied in different places, but that was my circle. I assumed it would be similar otherplaces since I always thought of my area as somewhat economically depressed.

That's interesting. Back in 1998 I didn't know anyone who didn't have a cell phone, one of the perks of living in a telephoneland I guess. Before cell phones became common circa 1996-1997 we had a good old Nokia Talkman 320F
