I think it was a staged thing between Rock and the Smiths, but not because the awesome Oscars security, hired by competent people of Hollywood, didn't obstruct Smith as he went up on stage.

Your two examples are autistic. Neither one of those was a physical assault and ODB got ushered off after an extended moment of cutting into someone else's time.

When Will Smith jumped up on stage no one thought he was going to hit Chris Rock. They probably thought he was going to make some wisecrack or do something funny and it might have been a great moment. No one is going to stop that. Had it escalated into more physical blows, I have no doubt that, yes, some security measure would have been taken. Instead it was one smack in the face and the entire disruption took a few seconds.

Again that entire front row are all powerful A-listers. If Bradley Cooper gets up from his seat, no one thinks "OMG, he's going to attack the host! Red alert! Get him!!"

I think it was staged, but I don't think it was something the Oscars planned. All the slap did was distract people from the show's Ukraine love fest and complaints about Florida not showing tranny porn to 1st graders. They wanted the focus on that stuff not celebrity hissy fits.
I do believe it was something Chris Rock and the Smiths agreed upon though. Smith has that gay streaming Bel-Air series that just came out and Rock was probably okay with some publicity as long as he didn't come off like a pussy. And Jada the attention whore gets a news cycle.

• This might just be hindsight but it looks choreographed. Rock seems to lean into it and Smith gives a big exaggerated, cartoon arc with his arm.

• Rock recovers way too well. I know he's been in the business a long time but his quick and largely mellow response seems suspect.

Thing to understand is, they are friends. Chris Rock did an episode of Fresh Prince way back (where he appeared in drag, so he's not above being humiliated for a joke) and he does those Madagascar movies with Jada. Chris' brother Tony also did this show 'All of Us' on UPN for four years, which was created and produced by Will and Jada.

So they're all good friends, they know each other real well. I find it unlikely that Will would just randomly decide that he's going to go up and slap the shit out of Chris Rock, and according to Jamie Foxx they 'made up' (as if there was anything to make-up) at the afterparty. Convenient, eh?
