Bleh. There's a good reason why Merlot was used exclusively in cuvées traditionally. Without something like a Cabernet Sauvignon to back it up it's wholly lacking of spice or zest, something interesting. One of the few grapes I'm not very fond of.

I don't care about Merlot that much either, my favourites are Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Corvina and (despite its "cheap" reputation) Gamay. Drinking Merlot while watching Sideways is just kind of a joke since the main character is a snobby wine elitist who refuses to touch Merlot (despite his favourite wine Chateau Cheval Blanc includes also, you know what). Besides his alcoholism it's also hinted he has Xanax addiction, and no, I'm not really recommending Xanax either to anyone, especially not with booze.

That opening sequence was bad ass though.
