You can't take t seriously, but you can still care about the characters. And Linkara's magnum opus is like LICD, the whole universe bends over backwards to suck his dick. Before a character is introduces you just know that it will be a "where is Poochie?" moment - somehow it will have to be tied to Linky.

As retarded as it is, at least Filthy Frank has a lore that's balls deep retarded but he treats it like a balls deep retarded lore, while his characters act as if their lives are at stake and at the same time poke fun at it with the added difference that it doesn't boil down to Josh Weadon "quip-quip-fourth wall-waifu-quip" shit.

It's sort of like something I think Welshy said about good farcical comedy and parody is that the protagonists act like the zany world they live is normal because if it feels like if they are in on the joke it ceases to be funny any more you get LOL RANDOM or irritating snarky Whedon humour.

The same is true for other genres too and it is a danger of overusing the breaking of the fourth wall. It's okay to have some characters like this but if everyone is then there are no stakes and you're just watching people messing about.

Linkara also never helps himself by having him be the hero, and the most boring kind of hero at that. I remember Lewis once saying that the Linkara "character" is more arrogant than him but I don't believe that at all. I can't imagine his character doing "Let the ads play" or lecturing people on the logistics of why he wouldn't be doing the ALS ice bucket thing.

That's probably why I love the Adam West Batman so much. Outside of stuff like the Batusi, dude doesn't really play his Batman any less serious than his successors, no matter how goofy it gets.

Because in their minds, they aren't like that, they're better and more noble. Lewis genuinely sees himself as intelligent and heroic, just like Spoony sees himself as being more calm and reserved. Remember that Spoony vs the internet about Mass Effect 3, he says "I'm playing a character when I do reviews" but he's talking the same way he did in those videos, acting all high and mighty about a subject he has no idea about and mocking the people who actually know what they're talking about. But in his mind, that's not what he's doing.

The funny thing about "Let the ads play" is that it wasn't meant to be a lecture, it was Lewis trying to be open, honest and respectful to the people who use ad block, asking them nicely to disable, or to support in other ways... but he has no idea how to do any of that, so he just comes off like a smug prick.
