I don’t think deconstructing a genre makes something inherently good, so what does DHI make of shows like Invincible and The Boys? Sticking to TV adaptations and not the comics for now.

Re: Capeshit thread (comics and movies)
I've only watched the first season of The Boys and half an episode of Invincible.
I have read both comics in full, though.
The Boys is edgelord shit. I get that you couldn't translate the comic into a show 1:1. It would be more fucked up than A Serbian Film.
However, I find that it takes really odd liberties and rewrites a lot for no good reason. At this point, I don't know if they will even have the same ending. Which is a shame because Black Noire is one of the few sources of lighthearted humor in the comic and I don't think they can keep that around.
Invincible is a mess. They wrote it as it goes along and it shows. The comic just loses the plot and gets real dumb real fast. It overstayed its welcome quite a bit.
Neither are as bad as The Crossed, which is even edgier and has never had any direction. It's a dumpster fire right from the start.

That’s the same vibe I get from it. I have a friend who really likes Preacher and is an apologist for Garth Ennis being a doofy edgelord who tugs it to soldiers but never had the balls to enlist. I’ve read The Boys so like you I can’t imagine it being 1:1, not sure if that’s better or worse.Kugelfisch wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 1:49 amI've only watched the first season of The Boys and half an episode of Invincible.

Invincible feels like someone said “Hey what if Superman was a Saiyan?” and went from there.
The Crossed is the worst of all to me, only person I’ve ever known who liked it was self described socialist liberal leaf slut, and her taste was terrible.

Crossed is the worst of Ennis. Completely mindless edgelordery.

Crossed is the kind of thing some edgy teen writes on livejournal and gets questioned by mental health professionals over.

It doesn't.Old Black Man wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 1:34 amI don’t think deconstructing a genre makes something inherently good
At best you get some hack who thinks he's subverting all the expectations by going "You now how things are supposed to go in [genre]? Now let me show what happens if everything goes wrong!"
At worst you get a mean-spirited edgelord like Garth Ennis.
This shit has also ruined the Western magical girl fandom. They all obsess over Meduka Meguca and its knockoffs like Magical Girl Raising Project because everyone' sad and the waifus can die.
Just read ryona doujins, you sick fucks.
The only good thing I can say about Invincible is that Atom Eve is hot Linkara autistically refuses to even entertain the notion of reading/watching it (because it's not from Marvel or DC).Kugelfisch wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 1:49 amInvincible is a mess. EDIT: Batman TAS is on Netflix now.
Looking back at the series, I'm pretty sure DC doomed itself when they came up with Harley Quinn instead of sticking with Captain Clown.

They're both equally shite + they're both produced by Seth Rogan, and it shows.Old Black Man wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 1:34 amI don’t think deconstructing a genre makes something inherently good, so what does DHI make of shows like Invincible and The Boys? And they both embiggen Mortal Kombat 1 (2023) with DLC characters (because the one thing always missing from MK were two different flavors of "Asshole Superman").
The plot thickens.
