Harry Potter is a massive cashcow

Not by the current movies, no. The last "Fantastic Beasts" movie got critically panned + underperformed at the box office, and the next one will very likely fail, too. Hardly anyone talks about them. No one's interested in tertiary characters who aren't named "Harry Potter" in that universe, but WB still needs to continue cashing in on the license regardless of how dilapidated it is, just like Disney's treatment of Star Wars & what Amazon has done to the Middle-Earth franchise.

Make a spinoff movie based on the author of an in-universe non-fictional book that got an actual IRL release? Weird, but okay I guess?
Decide to turn this spinoff movie idea into an entire prequel trilogy(?) that ultimately revolves around Dumblydores butt buddy Grindelwald? WTF does this have to do with the initial premise? And do we really need this? The main books have mentioned this Grindelwald story more than enough. All you're doing here is add stupid filler (like did you know that Voldemort's giant pet snake is actually an Asian chick?! That's right, the autistic boy lynched a woman of color in that last book/movie.)

I tremble at what they might do if they ever decide to adapt that Quidditch book that Rowling released along with Fantastic Beasts. I guess it will be a Netflix series about... Native American wizards? Or the first All-Black Quidditch team?

Really they should've gone a popular Harry Potter fanfic route and just tell a story about a different wizard school.
