I think the series improved a lot after Ian Flynn took over (#160). That's not to say his writing didn't have some flaws, or he didn't have some really lame story arcs. But he managed a level of consistency that wasn't there before, and his worst bits of writing were merely generic and mediocre rather than the "how in the world did you ever think this was a good idea" that some of the earlier writing in the comic could provoke.

No he replaced him with an robot version of him called Eggman from another reality that was later turned him human. Yes i looked that up, i don't know if Fleetway Sonic lore is less convoluted

I don't remember too much about Fleetway Sonic except for some of the storylines but a lot of the "lore" was fairly straightforward tbh as it is very clearly aimed at children. It was the individual storylines themselves that were ridiculous, as well as the need to shoehorn in stuff from the games.

One storyline in particular I remember had Sonic shrink down to subatomic size where the atom was actually like a magical desert planet with evil genies, ghosts and for some reason Robitnik was there as a benevolent leader or something (as well as his previous "good" self Kintobor).

As a kid, I did appreciate some things about the comics though. Metal Sonic looked pretty cool and I found Chaos pretty scary at the time.

I searched for information on that. There are a few places that claim it, like this post, but none of them cite a source. It isn't implausible that was his plan, but I didn't find anywhere that offered up a source for the claim.

Robotnik had already been replaced by another version at that point (basically, a Robotnik from another universe), though, I guess Penders wanted to replace him with yet another version. He seemed to have a weird thing for replacing characters with an alternate version of themselves, temporarily or permanently. Examples:
-The Endgame arc had Sally apparently die, but at the end it was revealed she actually survived. Penders' original plan was that it would later be revealed Sally actually was dead, and the Sally we now knew was just a robot. This didn't end up happening (not sure if he changed his mind or if editorial overruled it), but it was an idea he wanted to implement.
-Tails was revealed to have been replaced by a doppelganger without anyone knowing, including the doppelganger Tails himself.
-Antoine was revealed to have been replaced by an evil alternate universe version of himself that was masquerading as the real Antoine.
-In the same way, an evil alternate universe version of Sonic replaced the real Sonic in order to live out his life.

I actually kind of liked the Sanich comics more than the games themselves. That's not to say that I don't think the entire brand is unbridled autism, which it is, but I gotta give props to the Archie guys for going out of their way to create an entire lore for the series in a span of only two years or so after the comic debuted.

@Random Guy, any opinions on Ken Panders' attempts at continuing the whole 2dramatic4you vibe of the Sanich comics with his own "spiritual sequel" work?

I think the Robotnik switcheroo was just done to make Robotnik look like he actually does in the game. And the Sally thing sounds like he had been overruled, what with him not actually caring about characters he didn't create himself.

And what are the odds that despite all these alternate universe yokels fucking around all the damn time, everyone immediately blames the original for acting widely out-of-character? I know my bad writing, man. "Did Sanic just turn evil?!" plots never get old.
