Started a bit of Salt & Sanctuary. It is very strange that now character class starts with a helmet, considering how absolute shite the humans(?) look in this. Even modding everyone with the iconic Ctrl+Alt+Del sameface would be an improvement

If you want to talk about that game or need some HOT PRO STRATS, let me know. I played a ton of it. Salt is a very fun game and extremely impressive considering a guy and his wife made the entire thing. The player character looks dumb but a lot of the environments and monsters are neat. Salt uses darkness well too, unlike dark souls. Many of the later dungeons are so dim that you need some form of illumination to traverse them.

Salt has comparatively few HOT MEME REFERENCES for such a derivative type of game. It has a conventional metroidvania traversal unlock system as well, which puts it at odds with most soulslikes.

One of the few good 2d soulslikes.

Keep in mind that the same things that make souls games too easy also make Salt too easy, only more so. Dodging is much easier than in souls and so are parries. You only have two dimensions, so it's much easier to avoid incoming damage. All paths of magic are strong, so don't worry and use what you wish. Or use nothing, which is viable also.

I'll probably try to see if I can replicate my DS1 build on using pyromancy for scary stuff and a claymore for everything else.
I might also try out the polearms. I seem to recall people praising the halberd in Dork Souls, but I found that weapon too slow for my taste, with too much windup and recovery.

I like S&S a lot. Not a fan of the Souls franchise but that thankfully it was more Metroidvania for me and that helped. I suck at stats, but once I found a build and the weapons I liked it was fun. I definitely recommend trying different play styles after you finish and see how you like them, the combos kick ass. And yeah, you either like or dislike that Ska Studios art style, weird muppet faces and whatnot.

Blasphemous is a good game that is similar but focuses more on the old school Castlevania side of things. It’s more old school in that the upgrades are things like health and magic bar increases and new attacks, along with some accessories that add defense or offense and other bits. It just got a free DLC overhaul that’s more for NG+ players but has new content for starters.

Oh yeah, I was even contemplating mentioning that DLC, but I ended up forgetting it.

Though most of the new content (like the new bosses) are locked behind the NG+, which apparently also forces you to take an additional handicap (like turning your health bar into health orbs or something).
I do like that you can now donate to the local church, which will eventually let you unlock cool shit like letting you warp to all checkpoints. This will really cut down on backtracking, especially considering there are is also new loot to find.

There is also a new NPC that lets you upgrade your Not-Estus Flasks, reducing your total by one in exchange for having the remaining ones heal you more. Sounds like an interesting trade-off, and I'm not sure if other Souls clones have done something like this before.

(Though the most superior souls clone will always be Code Vein. Where else can you play as a vaguely Russian waifu with a sexy gas mask?)

They claymore is the best 2h sword in DS1, but I still prefer the halberd due to its reach. Although I always end up maining the Moonlight Greatsword or the great scythe.

I usually wield it 1-handed, actually. That thrust is pretty sweet.

I almost wrote in my earlier post "don't use the claymore in salt and sanctuary because it's too op." It's a lot stronger in S&S than in dark souls actually. I recommend trying out a lot of things. The polearms are fun. Spears are good too without being quite as strong. What makes greatsword weapons so broken in salt and sanctuary is they don't lose any speed, but gain a shit ton of reach and cover AND damage compared to other weapon types. So they're just straight-up the best weapons. Along with maybe scythes.
