I said this when he first got that house, years ago, but what the fuck did one person need with a big-ass house like that? Why buy space you won't fucking use? Even with April there, they didn't need more than 1 bedroom and 2 baths at most.

We can only speculate, but I can definitely see the appeal of a McMansion to suburbanite idiots like Noah and April who think big = better. They have no sense and taste and fools and their money are easily parted. Just imagine if someone actually made real houses rather than cheap mcmansions?

They're fast food version of houses: overpriced and all flash but no substance. I have noticed that the new houses just look flat out cheap. They have brick outer walls but I don't think the bricks really hold anything up and are just for show, and the bricks look cheap on top of that. My house was built I want to say in the 30's or 40's and it's a real red brick house. This thing can stay up for centuries if kept taken care of.

Yes. The way real brick houses are made is to create walls that are two bricks deep. This is obviously strong as fuck. You can tell real brick masonry because the bricklayer will turn bricks perpendicular every few rows to form "headers" that reinforce the wall and the pattern will look like this:



Exterior "brick veneers" provide no strength at all, they actually weaken the existing wall because they hang off of it (though that's usually the least of your problems). There is also a gap between the existing wall and the veneer which frequently leads to insect nests and mold growth. It's one of the worst "advances" in home building there has ever been.

I think it's more that it's cheaper and easier to make them that way, which means they can be flipped for a bigger profit.

Yep. Banks like these pieces of shit because they're dirt cheap to build, and with securitization now they sell the same house 5 times in 30 years compared to our grandparents, who bought a new house, paid it of in 30 years and lived in it for 50. Then loans are securitized and people who think you're mouth-breathing scum cast financial wagers on whether or not you'll default.

Finding a well-constructed house in the suburbs built in 2002 isn't impossible but you have to know your shit or hire someone who does. A 4 bedroom McMansion in a subdivision in Aurora, though, I'd expect that everything in the walls has gone to shit.

American houses, like the one Noah lives in, are all made out of paper. I was living in one such when I visited the states, and I swear, I could punch a hole through the outer wall. Thing is fake as hell, no comparison to European actual houses. No wonder they get their shit fucked when typhoons come their way

This actually kinda makes sense. Putting poor people into a sturdy house means you have to dedicate less time and resources into making sure it doesn't just collapse (like it happens all the time in Third World countries). You can basically ignore them unless they stop paying you.
Wealthier folks on the other hand can probably afford a renovation or a new house .
