How often do horror games even work?

How often? I'd say fairly seldom. Dead Space for example never did. It can startle you but I've always felt way too competent and capable to get scared by anything. Still a good game, though.
Condemned 1&2 worked pretty well. Before you get really comfortable with the fighting system it can be quite scary.

I would so hope for a kind of AI game. The first time you start the game you get all kind of questions like what games you liked and what kind of gamemechanics you like. Maybe let the game getin contact with your game libary on steam. Then you choose a setting and timeframe and the AI produces your unique game.
That will never happen, because it would end the game markets as we know them, but it would be cool

Its why I liked the original Bioshock, you're trapped in an under water city that looks ready to collapse at any moment. You go through the game wondering if that leaking glass tube is going to break. It's entirety atmospheric.
