There was also little to no point in the actual stats. High values mostly gave you an EXP bonus, or maybe a HP bonus if you're a Fighter with a high CON. And even then a 18 would give you a +2 bonus or something, which isn't that big of a deal.
It's mostly with AD&D that this stuff started to become more important, with anything from 3.0 upwards making it mandatory to keep your 1-2 main stats as high as possible.

I loved 3.5e but God was it complex imo. 5e is that perfect system for me where everything revolves around your stats and a d20 being rolled one time. Maybe I'm remembering wrong but 3.5 was always like 2-3 rolls for success, damage, a dodge, blah blah. Now it's just "I try the thing!" Roll d20, apply relevant stat modifier*, find out if you did thing or not. Much better
