In terms of cultural impact, I'd rank Event Horizon right up there with the greats of the genre. There are so many little brilliant bits in that movie. It couldn't have been an accident. How the hell did Event Horizon get made?

The director stepped into a wormhole and got temporarily replaced with an alternative universe version of himself that doesn't suck.

Brood is the perfect example of a movie that can go from creepy to camp in about a second. Sometimes that movie is fucking terrifying, such as when the kids are out murdering grandma or whoever the hell that was. Other times, like the weird vaginamonster shit at the end, the movie goes bananas.

Yeah, it's a really bizarre film.

But he's probably my favorite horror director. He's very consistently entertaining. Videodrome is the least campy and most disturbing IMO. ExistenZ, Brood, Scanners are all great fun but kind of have moments here and there that are a bit silly.

Cronenberg is great and, unlike his contemporaries, he hasn't gone spiraling downhill. Although I'm not a big fan of his recent drama films. Eastern Promises is pretty good but I don't get all of the praise that surrounds A History of Violence and Maps to the Star is meh. I really want him to make another body horror film.

When speaking of favorite horror directors, I'm ALMOST tempted to nominate that guy who made Event Horizon. Never has such a fucking brilliant, A+++ movie come from such a hack director. Nobody likes any of that guy's movies OUTSIDE OF EVENT HORIZON, which most science fiction horror fans love. It's so fucking good. How the hell did he even make it? That's like Uwe Boll coming out with Alien.

I've never seen Event Horizon because I hate Paul W.S. Anderson with a burning passion. Is it seriously that good?

Yes. Event Horizon was the inspiration for the Dead Space franchise, and there is nothing in that entire franchise that can hold a candle to the original Event Horizon. I'm not about to go hyperbolic, but it's the best of this type of movie since the original Alien. I can't really think of anything better. The Solaris reboot isn't better. The Solaris original is, but that's fucking old as shit. Sunshine isn't better. 2001 is debatable because that's a different kind of movie. I can't think of another science fiction horror film made AFTER Alien that is as good as Event Horizon.

And it's not ironically good, or so bad it's good. It's just fucking good. The dialogue is sharp, the characters are clever, the sets are gorgeous, the actors are on point, the stuff they do with colored lighting is nuts, the special effects are crazy and it's ACTUALLY SCARY.

I have searched high and low for science fiction horror movies. The majority are total shit. Event Horizon is something special. I guess you could make a case that The Thing is a bit better, but I'd almost say that's personal preference. It's barely even science fiction.

Dead Space is only good at all because of the moments when it straight-up steals Event Horizon wholesale. Everything good in that ENTIRE series is from Event Horizon.

The Ward is cliche and forgettable but there are countless horror films that are far worse.

The Ward is hardly even recognizable as a Carpenter film. It is exactly like so many DTV horror movies, not at all the work of a seasoned genre director.

If by seasoned you mean shitty and terribly overrated sure. If not for Sheryl Lee Vampires would be fucking unwatchable. And let's not talk about how he fucked up FEAR 3.

Anybody who doesn't think They Live, The Thing, Escape From New York, Halloween, The Fog, Big Trouble in Little China, and In The Mouth Of Madness are fantastic examples of B-movie (by design) genre filmmaking is just a joyless cunt.

The Thing isn't even really a b-movie. It's pretty dark and depressing, with fairly few funny or campy moments. It's full of gore, but I wouldn't say that alone makes it campy.

I use the term loosely. I'm categorizing it as a B-movie really just because of its genre. Being sci-fi horror it sort of gets lumped into the b-movie thing. In that sense it just happens to be a really fucking good one.
