Theres a lot of shit the nips are too lazy to remaster, and theres also a lot of old digital standard definition content that can't be properly remastered. So its either shit out a SD Blu-ray are make a crap upscale.
SD Blu-ray releases have been a lot more common over the last year or two, with Discotek shitting out a bunch in particular.
Maiden Japan (a subsidary of Sentai) shits out non-remasted Sunrise properties like Xabungle, and Bottoms is just another one of them. They also got into shit when they tried the same thing with Ideon, which had an actual remaster, before relenting and putting out a proper 1080p version that came out last month.

What about dunbine? I think it got released in more decent quality but maybe it’s another upscale.

No dunbine was remastered.
The other Byston Wells stories haven't been. Garzeys Wing never.

Yes. The advantage to SD Blu-rays is that you can fit a shitload of episodes per disc. This way you can have a whole series fit into a regular Blu-ray case instead of having a gigantic DVD set that takes up tons of space.

None of the vintage Votoms stuff is on Blu-ray even in Japan... all they have is DVD even there.

Of all the trash on my animu HD wishlist I'd have thought Votoms would be higher on the nips priority but I guess not. Even Layzner was released before it.

Beloved ANN founder Justin Sevakis claimed that he asked Tomino about GW and he refused to talk about it.
AFAIK GW was a JC Staff production and not with Sunrise. Wonder if they MOTHERFUCKED him, those SCUMBAGS.
