That's probably the goal, alongside forcing Russia to redeploy some of the forces currently pressuring Ukraine to defend the supply lines. Everything else was failing, so why not?

It could also be collateral to hold for when/if Trump wins and calls for an immediate deal - now they have something to trade for down the line.

This could also be the death throes. Ukraine's troops are not infinite. They could be risking everything on a push into Russian territory in hopes of ending the war. Sometimes very fucking unexpected shit like this happens in war. You'll see one side going hard and then they suddenly collapse because they over-extended. It looks like they're winning up until the moment they're not.

That could also happen to Russia too, of course. But it's much less likely, because Russia have so many more people and so much more land. They can easily draw back their front lines or dig in. Ukraine has less luxury of choice.
