Exploitation movies in the past would sometimes get funding and even get booked in theaters a few months in advance based on nothing more than a poster. The movie they were selling wasn't shot or even written yet. There's a joke about this in the movie ED WOOD and it's based in truth.

The modern superhero movie is an inflated version of that. Market research says that mid-July is a good time for a Spider-Man movie so they announce the date a few years in advance for SPIDER-MAN: GENERIC TITLE without anything written yet. And now they have to hit that date

The best thing for Batman would be a TV/streaming series. We've gotten so many Batman Minus Batman series already and it was a real waste.

The way Warner has been making Batman movies all this time is stupid. Two or three movies and then reboot. It never really goes anywhere or dives deep into the mythos. We just get the dead parents origin story, Joker, etc over and over again.

Gunn may be right that the best Batman stories have already been told. But they were told in comics and animation.

There are lots of possibilities for good Batman movies, but it's hard to speculate at this point because the tone and the worldbuilding of this new "Superman" movie is going to be foundational to this whole thing. And none of us have seen it.

Batman is Dracula. Batman is Godzilla. Batman is Sherlock Holmes. Batman is one of those characters who is going to be adapted and re-adapted in new movies and other media for the rest of our lives.

There will never be a high-profile 2D Batman movie. Because 2D is for kids.

I don't fault Gunn for not wanting to mine Batman too quickly, esp since he got cucked on using Pattinson.

Gunn is the top dog at this new DC movie universe project. Gunn has big hits to his name while DC is a brand in need of rehabilitation. If Gunn REALLY wanted Pattinson's Batman in his universe, I think he could make that happen.

I don't think he wants to do that, though. I think that Gunn wants his own Batman. I think that he's ambitious and would rather gouge out his own eyes with a fork than use someone else's vision for the Dark Knight. I don't think that you get to Gunn's position in the movie business if you DON'T think like that.

I suppose underperform is a good word. That or it does well, makes Warner's confident enough to do some really stupid shit; but it spends a lot of good will and those follow up projects all flop.

But I think my point is with Battinson still at large, Gunn introducing his own guy is just gonna be too much for the dumb masses. Better to do like Green Lantern and Flash.
