Howard Stern is a lesson in how the loud, edgy provocateur and the showbiz elitist blowhard can be the same person. If I had to isolate his chief flaw it's that Stern was never about an idea or even dedicated to the truth, really; Stern's main cause was Stern. He was out for himself. He wasn't a free speech champion. He ruthlessly pursued becoming as famous and rich as he possibly could.

And I don't even hold that against him except that it doesn't age well. When that guy becomes an old man, he no longer has anything relevant to say to the average person.

He’s a shittalker, fundamentally. I remember during the Conan debacle he went from pro Conan to anti Conan to having Conan on his show.

He will take, or used to take, before becoming another liberal mouthpiece; the stance that would allow him to talk the most shit - and that stance would change with the sun.

In his prime, Stern understood that good radio meant drama. If he wasn't in feuds with other radio personalities, he was ridiculing station management to their face on the air (very appealing to working people to hear a guy push around his "boss"). When that wasn't happening, Stern's crew were fighting amongst themselves. When that wasn't happening, Stern's problems with the FCC were interesting.

Anthony Cumia doesn't think that Stern is retiring and might even take a lowball offer from Sirius. It's not about the money, it's that Stern can't live without hosting a show. I can see that.

Going independent is always an option for him, but I do wonder if a 71-year-old attention junkie and guy who loves his celebrity party scene (or at least his wife does, which is important) has it in him to do that.

Stern likes to be the big fish in the pond and I think it would kill him if he went head-to-head with Joe Rogan and couldn't beat his numbers. He doesn't like to be humbled like that. It's incompatible with who he is. On Sirius, he could at least pretend like he's on top of the world still.

I'll be curious to see where he goes, not because I'm a fan of his anymore, but I want to see how I guy like him handles this. I agree with Cumia that I don't think Stern wants to retire. I think he would feel invisible and he wouldn't like that.
