Tomino doesn't do "less depressing." 08th MS Team is what most people should watch. It hits that sweet spot of animation + story + seriousness. War in the Pocket is good too.

I mostly know him as "Don't fall in love" Tomino. 'Cause if you do, either you or your waifu are fuuuuucked.

It's also one of the few UC stories free from the shackles of stupid space wizards. There's so little regular UC Gundam cancer in there, they had to put a Gundam head on a grunt mecha to fool audiences.

Yeah, the Ground Gundam is called "gundam" but is essentially a Ground GM with a few more expensive parts. It has the same vulcan as the GM and carries the same or similar weaponry. Ultimately kind of a shit design, since "more expensive" is a bad direction to go in for wartime production. The GMs worked well enough and were already as good as most of the Zeon MS at the time they were mass-produced. It hardly matters which MS is technically superior when you can field a lot more than your enemy and they're all "good enough." In space, the differences between a Rick Dom and GM were irrelevant and space was the primary battlefield for the war. It's obvious all those Zeon prototype MS for marine operations and other stupid shit were built around toy appeal for kids and then an excuse to use them was shoehorned into the animu.

08th MS is a strong contrast to the worst aspects of MS Gundam overall. Less focus on experimental prototypes and power battles. More focus on logistics, strategic operations and squad synergy. There are parts of original 0079 that play out that way too, but as the series drew on, it became more and more about Jedi Force Battles. Mixed with some good old Space PTSD.

I found it highly overrated. It's definitely no FMA.
